9 Disabled Passengers
9.1 We welcome disabled passengers on our service and make every practicable effort to make the journey as easy as possible for you if you have a disability affecting your mobility or other special needs. However we have only limited facilities for wheelchair users so we need to know in advance to make appropriate arrangements. Consequently wheelchair users may only make a booking through the Call Centre. These calls are not subject to the Call Centre booking fee.
9.2 Please be aware that the Call Centre staff may ask that you check-in up to one hour before your scheduled departure to allow the loading staff to place your vehicle close to the wheelchair access. As facilities for wheelchair users are limited, it is a good idea to make a reservation well in advance of planned travel.
9.3 Passengers with other disabilities should contact the Call Centre if they have special requirements or might need special assistance in an emergency situation.
10 Check-in
10.1 Check-in must take place in accordance to the booking conditions of your ticket type but never within 30 minutes and no earlier than 2 hours before scheduled departure time (please note that all times stated are local). 10.2 SpeedFerries reserves the right to sail 15 minutes before or after the scheduled sailing time.
11 Travel Documents and Personal Identification
All passengers including children and infants must posses valid travel documentation. For citizens of the European Union and certain other European states this means a valid, current passport which must be valid for the intended duration of your trip. Non-EEA citizens may have to obtain additional travel documents such as visas etc. and/or complete immigration forms at the port of entry or departure. It is the passenger’s own responsibility to be acquainted with the relevant rules and regulations in force at the time of travel. SpeedFerries accepts no liability in relation to passengers who are prevented from travelling on their booked sailings due to delays arising from the inadequacy of travel documents and any such event will count as a no-show.
12 Refusal to Permit Onboard
12.1 SpeedFerries staff is entitled to search passengers and/or their luggage and goods travelling with them to ascertain whether there are any persons onboard not entitled to travel or any articles of a prohibited nature. You hereby agree on your behalf and on behalf of all travelling with you to allow such search upon being requested by the Master of the vessel or other authorised personnel or agents of SpeedFerries to do so.
12.2 SpeedFerries may further refuse to permit onboard any items which in its reasonable opinion are unsuitable for carriage by reason of their weight, shape, size or character.
SpeedFerries reserves the right to refuse to allow onboard any passenger who:
- is in possession of any goods which SpeedFerries is prohibited by law from carrying on board: these include household pets or other animals on sailings into the United Kingdom (this does not include pets travelling under the Pets Travel Scheme), any dangerous, explosive, radioactive or noxious articles or substances, contraband, arms, ammunition, or articles or substances of a dangerous nature or such as to endanger the health or safety of other passengers
- who refuse to submit himself or herself or his or her vehicle, luggage or goods to a search when requested to do so or to follow the instructions of SpeedFerries personnel or agents or of personnel or agents of the port

12.3 In the event of refusal of permission to board under this provision, no refund of the fare or other charges is payable. SpeedFerries will in addition have an absolute discretion to jettison, land, destroy or render innocuous any such goods as described above.
12.4 It is not permitted to carry petrol/diesel other than that within your vehicle petrol tank. Portable reserve containers are not permitted under any circumstances and will be confiscated at the port for disposal.
12.5 Propane and Butane can only be carried in your vehicle if in tanks of up to 2.5kg. Containers that exceed 2.5kg are not permitted under any circumstances and will be confiscated at the port for disposal.
13 Animals
13.1 SpeedFerries is able to carry pets, which are eligible to travel under the Pets Travel Scheme. Only cats and dogs can travel under this program and SpeedFerries does not accept any other animals on board SpeedOne. All pets must be declared and registered on the booking prior to travel. In case an attempt is made to carry an undeclared animal, SpeedFerries staff can refuse to let the passenger travel without being liable to pay any subsequent compensation.
13.2 Passengers carrying a pet under the Pets Travel Scheme are solely responsible for having the correct documentation in place. SpeedFerries will not be liable for any loss or inconvenience related to planned travel being delayed or prevented due to your pet failing the checks under the Pets Travel Scheme.
13.3 Animals will have to remain in the vehicles during the crossing. It is the responsibility of the owner to make sure that the animal is healthy and fit to travel under these circumstances.
14 Liability, Insurance and Vehicle Insurance
We take every reasonable care to ensure a good service to our passengers, but just occasionally things may go wrong. The following terms are important as they have the effect of limiting or excluding SpeedFerries legal liability in some cases. You are strongly recommended to take out additional insurance to cover against any excluded loss or damages or any loss or damages above the relevant limits.
15 The Athens Convention
15.1 The Athens Convention is an international convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea done in Athens on 13 December 1974, as enacted in the United Kingdom and France, together with any modifications to it.
15.2 The Athens Convention limits a ferry operator's liability for death or personal injury or loss of or damage to luggage (which includes a vehicle) and makes special provision for valuables.
15.3 The Athens Convention presumes that luggage has been delivered undamaged unless written notice is given to the Carrier:
15.4 in the case of apparent damage, before or at the time of disembarkation or redelivery
15.5 In the case of damage which is not apparent or of loss, within 15 days from the date of disembarkation or redelivery or from the time when such redelivery should have taken place
15.6 The Athens Convention provides that any action for damages arising out of the death of or personal injury to a passenger or for the loss or damage to luggage shall be time-barred after a period of two years. That means you must issue legal proceedings within that period in case of dispute.
15.7 In no case will SpeedFerries be liable for any indirect or consequential losses or damage however arising whether in tort, contract, breach of statutory duty or otherwise caused by any act or default or breach by SpeedFerries, including without limitation any delay, inconvenience, lost profits, lost business opportunity and expenditure. For the avoidance of doubt, SpeedFerries will not be liable to you for any costs associated with any additional waiting time, or any other consequences of delay (including financial consequences and loss of business) if you miss your booked crossing.
15.8 Passengers are strongly recommended to take out insurance to provide protection against delays, loss or damage to personal effects, vehicles and other property as well as medical cover and vehicle breakdown insurance and personal travel cover for cancellation of journey for reasons beyond your control
16 Law and Jurisdiction
16.1 When you book with us your contract is governed by English law. In the unfortunate event a dispute arises English courts will have jurisdiction (subject to your right as a consumer to opt for the jurisdiction of your domicile as you are entitled to do under the relevant law). Please note that if you are domiciled in Scotland or Northern Ireland you have the right to use the courts of those jurisdictions.
16.2 Conditions of Carriage and Operator’s Responsibility
16.3 For technical and operational reasons SpeedFerries is unable to accept foot passengers. Because of the interior configuration of the ship SpeedFerries can only accommodate standard cars, vans, motorhomes and trailers up to a certain size:
- A standard car is defined as a car no higher than 1.85 m and no longer than 5.0 m
- Vans, motorhomes or vehicle + trailer must not be higher than 2.90 m, no longer than 7.0 m
- No vehicle or attachment may be wider than 2.0 m
- Please note that the limitations on vehicle size indicated above include any objects attached to the vehicle such as roof racks and boxes, ski boxes, bicycles etc.
- The total weight of any vehicle must not exceed 3.5 tonnes
- If you book a vehicle, which exceeds these measurements, SpeedFerries check-in staff has the right to refuse to allow you on board the vessel
- If you book a vehicle exceeding these measurements, no claims for any possible damage or loss can subsequently be made against SpeedFerries
- All vehicles must be functional
17 Onboard Safety
17.1 For safety reasons, passengers are strictly prohibited from staying in their cars during the crossing and there will be no access to the car deck during the crossing. Smoking on the car deck is strictly prohibited at all times. In the interest of passenger comfort a no smoking policy operates in the passenger lounges, so smoking is only allowed on the outside decks.
17.2 During the crossing you must follow the safety rules you will find posted on notices in the passenger lounges and you must always follow any safety instructions given to you by SpeedFerries personnel and agents including members of the deck and cabin crew.
18 Changes to Schedule
SpeedFerries reserves the right to postpone or cancel any sailing without prior notice in response to any event or situation which it could not reasonably have foreseen or which was not within its reasonable control. SpeedFerries will not be liable to you in such circumstances.
18.1 SpeedFerries has the right at its sole discretion and without any liability to any passenger to depart from the scheduled sailing or itinerary, to delay, advance or cancel any sailing, to omit or change ports of call, to arrange for substantially equivalent transportation by another vessel and/or by another means of transportation, to require any passenger to disembark from the vessel temporarily or permanently, to tow or to be towed or to assist other vessels or to perform any similar act, which in the sole judgement and discretion of SpeedFerries and/or the Master is justified on grounds of safety or security.
19 Third Party Rights
If you make a booking on behalf of one or more persons, you confirm and that you have their permission to make the booking on their behalf and that they agree to these Terms and Conditions and you will be liable to us for any loss, damage or expense incurred by SpeedFerries if this confirmation is wrong. In all other respects, a person who is not a party to this contract may not enforce or otherwise have the benefit of any provision of this contract under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999.
20 Amending a Booking Online
20.1 Certain ticket types can be changed via SpeedFerries online amendment service or the Call Centre. Whereas changes made via the online service are generally free of charge (see 19.2), a fee applies if the service is provided by the Call Centre - unless this concerns an adjustment of the passenger list.>
20.2 A transfer of travel time is always subject to an amendment fee and if the new departure has a higher price than the departure originally booked, the difference will be payable in addition to any fee. Please be aware that if the new departure has a lower price than the original departure, no refunds will be made.
20.3 Tariffs may be subject to changes at any time and without prior notice and in accordance with SpeedFerries’ general pricing policy, there is a discount for using the internet.
20.4 Changes to an existing booking will be charged according to the tariff in force at the time, when the change, not the booking, is made. If more changes are made simultaneously only the highest fee will be charged.
20.5 Please be aware that all changes are subject to availability and that no capacity or service is booked on any departure until (1) a payment transaction has been successfully completed or (2) the new booking details are confirmed at the end of the amendment procedure.
20.6 This means that on very rare occasions the last available space may be booked by another customer during the amendment procedure although it appeared to be available, when the customer initiated the amendment procedure.
20.7 As a low cost operator SpeedFerries upholds a no cancellation and no refund policy, which means that items once booked cannot be cancelled and refunded which applies to the online amendment service as well as the Call Centre.
20.8 Please note that booking numbers and security codes are strictly personal and should be treated with care as the customer will be responsible for changes made to a booking via the online amendment service.
21 Travel Insurance
21.1 The specific Terms and Conditions for SpeedFerries Travel Insurance form an integral part of SpeedFerries Standard Terms and Conditions. If you are buying a travel insurance product via SpeedFerries booking pages you automatically accept the specific Terms and Conditions once you confirm you have read, understood and accepted SpeedFerries standard Terms and Conditions.
21.2 Please ensure you read the Terms and Conditions applicable to your Travel Insurance carefully. For full details please read our Terms & Conditions Document (pdf).
21.3 Please be aware that according to FSA regulations you may cancel a purchased insurance within 14 days, provided travel has not commenced.
21.4 You will receive an email confirmation and full policy wording within 24 hours. In the meantime the registration of an insurance purchase on your SpeedFerries booking confirmation is sufficient documentation of cover for travel purposes.
22 Foot Passengers
SpeedFerries offers a limited number of foot passenger spaces on selected sailings. Passengers wishing to travel this way must make a valid booking via the website or Customer Centre, prior to arriving at the port, as persons without pre booked reservations will not be accepted due to security regulations imposed by UK authorities.
Babies are free of charge, but must be registered on the booking. They are not entitled to a separate seat in the port shuttle bus.
Each traveling party must include at least 1 adult aged 18 years or over. SpeedFerries is not able to offer pets travel in combination with foot passenger bookings.
Foot passengers must arrive at the appropriate meeting area outside the gates of the port of departure no later than 45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
Each person can bring a max of 1 suitcase/backpack + 1 piece of hand luggage, but under no circumstances will a person be allowed to take more luggage than they can carry themselves.
